Non-traditional students are more likely to have children or aging parents at home. Not every call they receive is an emergency, but the only way they can tell the difference is to quietly leave the classroom and answer the call. In the classes I've had with non-trads, they could minimize classroom disruption by making sure their phone was set to vibrate and sitting close to the door.

Tell me how many true emergencies occur that would require someone to leave a classroom early because of a phone call? It is vanishingly small.
